August/September 2005Just Foolin' AroundThe dog days of summer find plenty of folks seeking relief in cold desserts. The dictionary can help—here's a taste. Before Ben & Jerry’s produced Cherry Garcia ice cream (honoring Jerry Garcia, who died ten years ago this month), folks were spooning up peche melba (named for opera soprano Nellie Melba, who died more than 70 years ago). Interested in the names of other frozen desserts? Play around with the Search function of the Unabridged Dictionary. First click on Advanced Search, then type ice cream into the Definition field. The search turns up 73 entries, including black cow, Eskimo Pie, gelato, spumoni, and tutti-frutti. We didn’t find any more kinds of ice cream named for musicians, but we did turn up two more eponymous ice cream-based desserts: bananas Foster and tortoni. Oh, and curious about that phrase dog days?
