Just Foolin' Around

Want to celebrate Father's Day by fooling around in the dictionary? Try tracing the meanings, the offspring, and the fatherhood of various father terms.

In addition to the impressive fact that the word father appears at 31 entries in the Unabridged Dictionary (including the somewhat confusing White Father, Great Father, and Great White Father), father is found in the definitions of 171 terms ranging from the French-based couvade to patripassianism. Then, to get back to the root of some of these father terms, pater (the Latin root of father) has fathered 23 words (including expatriate and perpetrate).
