October 2008September TOP TWENTYThe political season may be winding down, but in September we saw plenty of evidence of it in the words being looked up online. Many of the words in the Top Twenty list are looked up regularly all year, but some clearly point to our users' acute interest in the presidential race. It should be no surprise to see maverick on the list, and we have more to tell you about how that word wandered into English in the Word History section. We also saw increased numbers of look-ups of bipartisan (which made it to #30 and which we feature in the Just Foolin' Around section) and democracy (which made it to #44). Bailout and socialism finished in the top 200 words and 300 words respectively, showing users' interest in financial news. |
