May 2005Language LinksThe Web is rich in sites devoted to language, and each month our editors will share a few of their favorites with you. See this month's picks! The Web site for the American Dialect Society ( www.americandialect.org) is one that every word lover should know about. It welcomes non-members and members alike to its e-mail discussion list and includes an archive of words selected as Word of the Year by ADS going back to 1991. In addition, for fun, try twisting someone's words. We have two suggestions for how you can do that—anagrams and tongue twisters at these two sites: www.anagramgenius.com An anagram is a word or phrase made by transposing the letters of another word or phrase. Sounds simple, right? The 'genius' part comes in on this Web site, which allows users to browse archives of clever anagrams (more than 20,000 so far) sorted by category (Under 'Literary' we found this anagrammatic spin on “Merriam Webster Dictionary”: “Cite words by criteria, merit”). Add to the archive, or download your own anagram software. www.uebersetzung.at/twister Selling seashells by the seashore goes international on this Web site. You'll find more than 2,000 tongue twisters in 107 languages ranging from Acholi to Zulu. Translations are available. |
