The Puzzle Corner

Last month we asked you to submit your favorite Tom Swifties, a particularly low form of pun in which the adverb plays on the rest of the sentence. This month we thank all who sent in submissions, and we pass along a few fill-in-the-blanks for those who can't get enough of these groaners.

We begin with a linked pair of Tom Swifties:

1. “The prisoner is climbing down the wall,” said Tom ________.
2. “I captured the escaped prisoner,” said Tom _______________.

And then move on to a set of Swifties packaged in brand names:

3. “I dropped my toothpaste,” said Tom ___________ .
4. “I prefer vodka,” said Tom __________________.
5. “Let’s go to McDonald’s,” said Tom ___________.
6. “I can’t believe I ate the whole pineapple,” said Tom _________.
7. “I have run out of dishwashing detergent,” said Tom___________.
8. “I have some pre-packaged cheese slices,” said Tom ________.
9. “I just bought a British sports car!” said Tom______________.
10. “Please take away that Pepsi,” said Tom ____________.

And close with a few just for fun:

11. “Elvis is dead,” said Tom _______________.
12. “You must consider the past, the present, and the future,” said Tom ______.
13. “That’s actually the brightest star in the northern hemisphere,” said Tom ___.
14. “That statue of Venus is my favorite,” said Tom___________.
