Language Links

If all this language stuff is getting to be too much for you, maybe it’s time to switch to animal noises. Here are some links to help.

Interested in animal sounds from around the world? Here’s a fun site for the younger set (and their parents): www.bzzzpeek.com. If you can identify silhouettes of animals, you can hear the sounds associated with them in various countries and languages. As a bonus, you might learn a thing or two about flags.

Catherine Ball and the faculty of Languages and Linguistics at Georgetown University posts their own list of international animal sounds, complete with orthographic transcriptions, and links to insect sounds and endangered languages of the world at www.georgetown.edu/cball/animals/animals.html. The site also includes helpful information for children interested in language.
