May 2006Words in the News: deciderPresident Bush made the news on April 18 when he addressed critics with the words "I'm the decider, and I decide what is best." Read on to see how dictionary users reacted. His decision to use the word decider rather than the more common decision maker or slightly wordier "the one that decides" sent many people to look up decider in the dictionary. It also made decider the most looked-up word on both the 18th and the 19th, as well as the word that attracted the highest number of look-ups on any single day in April, and the 41st most looked-up word for the month. So, to answer the question, yes, decider does have the sense "one that decides," but the word more commonly appears in sports journalese, such as "tomorrow's game will prove to be the decider of this season's rivalry." Perhaps, in this case, the President's baseball background was influencing his word choice. Recalling that President Bush's use of kerfuffle last month sent that word into the month's Top 100 list, we wonder what word he has in store for us this month. If it's commutual, fusil, or surgy, we may have discovered that we have a subscriber at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Check out this month's Notable and Quotable and get a jump on the story. Remember, you read it here first. |
