Bits and Bytes

Dictionaries have long been available in bookstores, on CD-ROM, and, of course, online, but Merriam-Webster dictionaries are now also available for your cell phone, as a handheld device, or on a portable USB drive. This month we take a look at some of the devices from Franklin Electronic Publishers.

Franklin Electronic Publishers has partnered with Merriam-Webster to create portable electronic dictionaries since the 1980s. Their Speaking Merriam-Webster's Collegiate® Dictionary has proven especially useful when Merriam-Webster editors find themselves away from their bookshelves or computers (it happens!).

Most recently, Franklin has released The Merriam-Webster Dictionary and MP3 Player, which offers parents and students a nice compromise between education and fun. The handheld device features 274,000 entries based on the bestselling paperback The Merriam-Webster Dictionary, along with spelling correction and word games, plus a bonus 119 MB of internal memory with SD expansion slot to store MP3 files—like songs, podcasts, or audiobooks—uploaded via USB.
