May TOP TWENTY

The passing of the swine flu from the headlines brings us a list with fewer news-related terms this month. The school year is ending, and we see many old friends in the lookup list from May — words that are looked up on a consistent basis that don't seem to connect with events of the day or school-related assignments.

  1. ubiquitous
  2. integrity
  3. cynical
  4. facetious
  5. pretentious
  6. apathetic
  7. effect
  8. albeit
  9. conundrum
  10. gorgeous

  1. imminent
  2. quite
  3. agnostic
  4. egregious
  5. hypocrite
  6. affect
  7. whether
  8. ensure
  9. pragmatic
  10. tenacious

Agnostic appears for the first time in a while, and the words swine, pandemic, and epidemic have dropped far from last month's highs — although recent declarations by the World Health Organization may bring these words back to the public's attention.

This past month also saw saturnine peak briefly after columnist Maureen Dowd used the word in the New York Times, but it didn't crack the monthly Top Twenty. Other words that got attention in May were peevish and strident. When you note that cynical was high on the list this month, it would seem that some negative impressions were lurking behind vocabulary searches.
