January 2010December Top TWENTYA blockbuster from Hollywood was also a vocabulary blockbuster for December: avatar was the most looked-up word in the Online Dictionary. Tiger Woods's use of the word transgressions made it the subject of nearly as much curiosity as the famous golfer's private life – probably because it was one of the few clues given to the public on the matter. The word prosperous was looked up with increasing frequency toward the end of the month, coming in at #1 on New Year's Day itself. Here's the full list. Other words that made it into the top 100 lookups for December include fascism and precipice. Fascism was used by U.S. Congressman James Sensenbrenner in the phrase "scientific fascism" to argue against the consensus of those gathering in Copenhagen for the United Nations Climate Change Conference in December. President Obama used the word precipice when discussing passage of health insurance reform in the Senate (see this month's article on precipice here). |
